BIO

“Michael has an absolutely fascinating property: he can, by his conducting, convince other people to love the music he is dealing with as much as he does.”

Antony Hermus

As Artistic Director of the Beethoven Orchestra for Humanity, described as “a disruptive orchestral experience for today’s world”, Michael is interested in creating the conditions for the music to directly engage anyone. Their debut concert ‘Get Inside the Sound’ sold-out and they are now engaged in a series of chamber concerts in support of their next major project: ‘The Cost of War’.

Having assisted for the World Premiere of John Joubert’s stunning opera ‘Jane Eyre’, in early 2017 Michael was named as the first Assistant Conductor of the English Symphony Orchestra, where he enjoys a close relationship with the composers whose work the orchestra often performs and whose recordings are gaining glowing reviews. In September 2017 Michael began his tenure as Music Director of the Herefordshire Youth Orchestra.

Acclaimed by the Yorkshire Post as an ‘Electric Conductor’, Michael won both the audience and Headley prize at the Leeds Conductors’ Competition and third prize in the International Pedrotti Conducting Competition. Following this Michael formed Charities Philharmonia: a critically lauded semi-professional orchestra consisting of graduates and students drawn from the London conservatoires. Here he produced and conducted five seasons of concerts exclusively in aid of charities including The Red Cross, Cancer Research UK, NSPCC and The Musicians’ Benevolent Fund.

“Michael has an absolutely fascinating property: he can, by his conducting, convince other people to love the music he is dealing with as much as he does.”

‘Electric Conductor’

Michael has been assistant conductor to Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ed Gardner at the English National Opera and worked as Cover Conductor and Assistant Chorus Master for Grange Park Opera. He has been Music Director of London Youth Opera, Little Operations and founding conductor of the Vanbrugh Ensemble.

Michael began conducting whilst an undergraduate at the University of Leeds where he was awarded the Lord Snowden Prize for raising the profile of classical music at the university. Here he formed the Leeds University Union Symphony Chorus and established a series of charity concerts in aid of Cancer Research UK at Leeds Town Hall that continue to this day. Whilst studying postgraduate conducting, piano and harpsichord at the Royal College of Music, Kurt Masur awarded Michael the London Philharmonic Orchestra Conducting Fellowship and following this he became the Sir Charles Mackerras Fellow at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London.

Michael is an alumnus of Agnes Kory at the Bela Bartok Centre for Musicianship.
